Where Children Grow and Succeed Together
Welcome to Year 1
The children have all settled into the hustle and bustle of Year 1. They have been working so incredibly hard and are really enjoying their new curriculum.
This term our topic in English is 'Transport'. The children have been using a wide range of high quality texts such as 'Mr Gumpy's Outing' by John Burningham to develop skills such as labelling and writing simple sentences with a full stop.
At St Mary's we deliver Phonics through Sounds-Write. This is a synthetic phonics programme which helps develop the skills of segmenting, blending and phoneme manipulation. It teaches children to become independent in 'saying the sounds and reading the word' or 'saying the sounds and writing the words'. It also helps them develop a good understanding of the different ways we spell sounds.
In Maths we have been following White Rose. This is a mastery approach to developing core maths skills. The children have been working on numbers to 10, more/less than and counting on and back.
The children have also been learning about mapping skills in Geography and the use of Primary colours and line in Art. They have created some super Mondrian paintings.
PE
PE in Year 1 is on a Wednesday and Thursday afternoon. The children need to attend school on these days in their PE kit. Children with long hair must have it tied back and earrings need to be removed or tape provided to cover them up. The children will be accessing PE outside so please ensure that PE kits are weather appropriate.
